The scientists from the Northern Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute(Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences) have done successfully a researchinto hybridizing rice varieties PB53.

PB53 is the product of N46 x BT13 hybrid combinations, with growing period of 120-128 days in the spring crop and 95-110 days in the seasonal crop. Its stem is hard with standing and thick leaf, strong tillering, mild infection with some main pests (BPH - Brown plant hopper, Rice blast disease, Sheath blight, leaf blight), elongate grain, milled rice rate reaches 70%, amylose content at 18.2%, and good quality of cooked rice which still remains soft, supple after cooling. Test results in the Northern mountainous provinces showed that PB53 had average yield of 69 quintals/ha in average level of intensive farming, and in high intensive farming condition, this yield could reach 70-75 quintals/ha.
