Scientists at the Forest Industry Research Institute(Vietnam Academy of Forest Sciences) have succeeded in studying the technology for producing multi-layer laminated denatured plywood with big size from Eucalyptus urophylla; this type of plywood can be used for building a ship.
The production technology of multi-layer laminated plywood with big size from Eucalyptus urophylla wood is the result of a state-level project named "Research into processing certain types of plantation timber from Group 5 to Group 8 as materials for shipbuilding", which has been done through the following steps: over-10-year-old eucalyptus wood is cut into 1.3 m long parts to peel for the core layer and 2.5 m long parts to peel for the surface layer; the peeled slabs of wood are dried until their moisture is about 8-10%, then impregnated in PF glue (phenol foocmaldehyde); the impregnated slabs are then dried about 25-30% in moisture and then layered and pressed at 130oC temperature, 2 MPa pressure during 1.5-2 min/mm of thickness. This production technology was acknowledged as one of the 2015 technical advances by Ministry of Agriculture Forest and Rural Development because the product met the standard EN 13986:2004 on the quality of adhesion and elasticity.
