Farmers fined for growing bean sprouts with banned chemicals 5:07 PM,8/14/2012
Nguyen Xuan Hong, head of the Department of Plant Protection, said that tests of bean sprouts from markets showed that they did indeed use banned chemical, which had led to inspection of households that were growing bean sprouts indoors.
Supervisors collected a Chinese chemical liquid substance from some of the households. According to experts, this chemical helps grow vegetables faster and makes them shinier and more attractive to consumers. However, because of adverse affects on human health the chemical has been banned in the country.
Hong said that people can clearly distinguish between tainted and fresh vegetables, as tainted bean sprouts have no roots and their stem is bigger than fresh sprouts.
