Health watchdog confirms no worms in dairy, yogurt products 8:44 AM,11/13/2012
The health watchdog released a document to quash rumors after a resident of Thach Hung Commune said he bought a carton of Ba Vi brand fresh milk and found in the residue some leeches floating in the product.
Another resident of Thach Mon Commune also detected a strange wormlike creature in a Vinamilk brand yogurt carton. These rumors caused a great deal of concern among people in the province.
Soon after the rumors spread in the province, the food safety watchdog, market management board and the preventive health center visited the two above mentioned residents to verify their statements and possibly collect samples of the contaminated products.
Tran Thi Thuy in Thach Hung Commune said they had thrown away all the dairy products, while the Thiet family in Thach Mon Commune provided the supervisory team with a carton of the Vinamilk brand yogurt with the manufacturing date October 2, 2012 and expiry date November 2, 2012.
In the carton, there were also some flakes that did not resemble any leechlike creature. The family told the supervisory team that they had bought four cartons of yogurt but the three others were not contaminated.
The People’s Committee of Ha Tinh Province had ordered the supervisory team and related agencies to take dairy and yogurt samples from distributors and shops across the province for testing, especially Ba Vi milk products and Vinamilk yogurt.
After proper tests, none of the products were found to be contaminated with leechlike creatures.
