Hanoi reduces power consumption 2:13 PM,5/27/2013
Hanoi is the country’s political, economic and cultural center. Therefore, the city has a large demand for power. To use energy in an effective manner, Hanoi has launched a series of programs and activities in recent years to promote more efficient energy use. Public awareness has gradually improved. Many households in Hanoi have adopted energy-saving solutions as part of the “Household Energy Efficiency and Conservation” movement. In the 2006-2010 period, the city saved approximately VND820 billion and reduced CO2 emissions by nearly 50,000 tonnes. In particular, the city reduced total power consumption by 3.6 percent. In the 2011-2012 period, Hanoi also saved about 1.7 percent of total power consumption.
Following successes in the previous periods, in the 2013-2015 period, Hanoi set out goal to promote energy-saving particularly through focusing on industrial production, construction, transport and services. The city is striving to save six to nine percent of total power consumption based on the power development plan approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
To achieve this goal, Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade will organize training courses and grant power management certification to more than 400 people in industrial production and about 170 people in building management. In addition, the promotion of the use of power-saving devices in offices, buildings and homes, such as compact fluorescent bulbs, air conditioners or refrigerators with mounted inverters will be underlined. In particular, the application of standards and norms to reduce at least 10 percent of power usage in industries will also be highlighted.
In terms of buildings, all new buildings in the adjustment range of construction standards will be carried out in accordance with required standards. In addition, all new public lighting devices need to feature energy-saving solutions.
Hanoi has speeded up the construction of transport infrastructure in recent years. Therefore, the transport sector needs to implement energy-saving solutions. Hanoi set out goals for the transport sector, including developing a high-quality transport system, ensuring efficient power usage and a limit to environmental pollution. In addition, promoting the use of new technology and renewable energy to replace traditional fuels are also needed.
According to Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade Deputy Director Pham Duc Tien, domestic power consumption accounted for over 50 percent of total commercial power usage in the city. Therefore, the implementation of the “Household Energy Efficiency and Conservation” movement has contributed to reducing power consumption and allowed families to save money. After three years of implementation in Hanoi, the movement has achieved good results. According to a survey, 100,000 households in Hanoi are currently engaged in the movement. The overall goal of the energy-saving program in Hanoi is to reduce total power consumption by six to nine percent through the implementation of energy-saving activities in industrial zones, export processing zones, craft villages, buildings and the transport sector.
