 Dr. Sc. Tran Dinh Toai, working at the Institute of Chemistry of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, has cooperated with the Institute of biochemical physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences to research and produce ethanol from agricultural waste materials as straw. Annually, untreated agricultural waste, approximately 80-100 million tons, polluting the environment and affectin cultural landscapes, is able to be a is a high economic value resource because it is a lignocelluloses biomass.

According to the pilot study, 1 kg of straw will gain about 0.4 kg cellulose. If it is used microbial strains with highly active enzyme system, the efficiency of hydrolysis stage can achieve 80-90% , that means 0.4 kg cellulose will gain average 0.34 kg glucose. By the above method, with large amounts of agricultural waste (straw) in our country today, if used 30% of them to produce ethanol with 15% efficiency, we were able to obtain from 3.6 to 4.5 million tons of ethanol, which exceeded the target set by the government until 2015.
