Saving power in public lighting 2:55 PM,5/31/2012
Electricity used for lighting accounts for a sizeable portion of the power consumption structure in our country. That is why for many years, the engineers of the Center for Energy Technology and New Materials under the Institute of Energy Science (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), with scientists of the Institute of Energy Science, have been absorbed in researching the model of automatic luminous flux adjusting device.
Saving power in public lighting
Engineer Truong Quoc Thanh, Deputy Director of the Center for Energy Technology and New Materials, said that in recent years, our country had applied many energy saving measures to lighting equipment and systems. In particular, a very important problem is how to use the capacity of lighting reasonably to suit each purpose of lighting. Especially for lighting in public places, since the traffic density late at night is often very low, maintaining 100% of lighting capacity is unnecessary. The reduction of lighting capacity in this time of the day, therefore, has become mandatory for modern public lighting.
Scientific and socio-economic values
Dr. Ngo Tuan Kiet, Director of Institute of Energy Science, said this study was very useful for the power industry and the people. The study team has put many efforts on innovating and improving the efficiency; saving performance indicators have been very positive and increasing. These parameters have been correctly examined, confirming that the equipment is working properly, effectively and has scientific and socio-economic values.
Through practice, scientists at the Institute of Energy Science have found that the measure of using two-capacity ballast to reduce power consumption of lighting equipment is costly and unable to adjust the level of reduction, while the solution of using the control panel to automatically turn off lamps has a drawback that it creates dark areas on the road surface, so it does not guarantee traffic safety. The solution of installing secondary ballasts for common ballasts to form the combination of two-capacity ballasts has a drawback that its repair and replacement costs are too high and the level of reduction is also not adjustable.
The final selection is automatic luminous flux adjusting device, because it has high efficiency in public lighting and does not set any conditions for installation, especially in areas where voltage is unstable or too high or too low; lights shall work stably in accordance with specifications of the manufacturer thanks to automatic voltage stabilizer which contributes to increasing the lifespan of lights.
Easy installation
For the automatic luminous flux adjusting device, the installation is very simple. Specifically, technicians just need to install the device on the back of circuit breakers in the street or at substations. Then, they set the automatic adjusting parameters and let the device operate automatically.
The technical features of this device allows the automatic voltage stabilizers of lighting systems automatically turn on lights when it gets dark and automatically turn off lights when it is light; automatically reduce power by 20% - 40% at night. Time relay works accurately even during power outages without having to reset the time, has the ability to adjust power levels as required. The slow power switch mode keeps old lights from turning off when their life spans have expired. The average power saving rate of this device system is 30% -40% or higher.
Engineer Thanh said that the device had been widely installed in the provinces of Phu Tho, Thua Thien - Hue, Long An, Hoa Binh and had been very effective.
