Energy efficiency in Thep Viet Steel JSC 2:57 PM,5/31/2012
Competition by quality
Domestic steel market in recent times has developed complicatedly with the arrival of many domestic and foreign steel products. However, there is a product which has attached to and positioned its brand in the mind of customers; it is Pomina steel product of Thep Viet Steel JSC.
Founded in 1992, with the motto 'quality is survival' and a large distribution system, the prestige of Thep Viet has been increasingly confirmed. In 1999, Thep Viet invested in Pomina Steel Mill, with the total investment of more than USD 68 million and modern technologies of Italia and Germany.
Being aware that product quality is the key to success, right from the first batch of steel, Pomina Steel Mill had applied the ISO 9001 – 2000 quality management system, and then the brand of Pomina steel rapidly gained the trust of customers. According to Mr. Do Xuan Chieu, General Director of Thep Viet Steel JSC and Chairman of the Board of Pomina Steel Mill, to meet the highest requirements of customers, Pomina has selected and strictly complied with the JIS standard of Japan, ASTN of the U.S. and TCVN of Vietnam. Raw materials are put through close inspection before they are rolled, and with modern technologies of steel rolling, the mill has manufactured steel products with outstanding advantages of bearing strength and durability, consistent with industrial and civil constructions. Pomina Steel is proud of contribution to the success of thousands of big and small constructions throughout the nation, including many works that have a strategic role in the socio - economic development of the country, such as Can Tho bridge, Ben Luc bridge, Rach Mieu bridge, Dong Nai Hydropower plant, Ya Ly hydropower plant, Se San hydropower plant...
In 2005, Thep Viet oriented the long-term and comprehensive development by investing in a steel embryo refinery to curb steel imports and dependence on foreign steel, while increasing the competitiveness with imported steel products. In 2007, Thep Viet Steel Refinery (Phu My I Industrial Zone, Tan Thanh district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau) was founded. This is the most modern refinery in Vietnam, applying steel refinery technology using electric arc furnace with continuous fuel loading type from the side, with a total investment of hundreds of millions of dollars, increasing the total capacity of Thep Viet system to 1.5 million tons of refined steel and 1.6 million tons of rolled steel per year.

Saving energy
Steel is one of the industries which use huge amount of energy and fuel. Steel embryo refinery technology in our country today is mainly using electric furnace with low capacity and outdated technologies, so energy consumption rate is very high. This is the disadvantage that makes it difficult for domestic steel products to compete with the same products of foreign countries. However, Thep Viet has thoroughly overcome that problem when investing in and applying the world’s most advanced and modern technologies in production.
According to Mr. Do Xuan Chieu, energy consumption in Thep Viet is considered very low. Specifically, power consumption is just about 350 kWh per ton of liquid steel, while other facilities need 500 to 550 kWh. Operation costs have been saved since the Static VAR Compensator (SVC) is not used due to small power flow deviation, discarded materials which require less processing can be used...
Being aware that reducing energy consumption not only saves the cost of production, reduces product price, directly bring profits to the company but also contributes significantly to the overall development of society, in recent years, Thep Viet has launched many movements to promote technological initiatives and innovations throughout the entire company. Many initiatives to improve quality, save energy and fuel of officials, engineers, workers in the company have been deployed and achieved practical results.
The promotion of energy saving measures has reduced costs, created competitive advantage in the market for Thep Viet and significantly limited adverse impacts on the environment during the rolling process. Besides, production costs of Thep Viet are much lower than those of units in the sector since the productivity is high thanks to shortened refinery time of each steel batch (average refinery time per batch of steel ranges from 40 to 45 minutes). This is the basic reason why Thep Viet’s products are accepted in the market and the company has maintained an annual growth rate of over 20% and the turnover of trillions of VND.
In the future, in addition to promoting energy saving measures and expanding production scale, the company shall focus on implementing environmental protection measures, handling steel slag generated during production, gradually building up the image of an efficient, qualitative and environmentally friendly steel business.
