Poly L(+) Lactic Acid (PLA) is product from polycondensation reaction in solvent bulk using Tin metallic powder. Determination of molecular weight of PLA by viscosity method is a simple technique and simultaneous evaluation of molecular weight in the relative large range (M= 104-106). The comparison of results from Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), PLA melting points and viscosity methods showed the good correlation. The difference between PLA molecular weights which measured by viscosity and GPC methods is about 11%. Results from viscosity method showed that it can be used for quick, simple and low cost measurement in comparison with GPC method for evaluation of influences of granule Sn catalyst sizes on polycondensation reaction.
This method was applied for investigation of influence of catalyst size on the polycondensation of L(+) lactic acid to produce PLA
