Due to the increasing demand for electricity, on Nov 25th 2009, the National Assembly adopted Resolution No. 41/2009/QH12 on the investment in Ninh Thuan nuclear power project with the total capacity of 4000 MW. According to the roadmap, the plant will be started in 2014 and officially put into operation in 2020.

According to Mr. Le Van Hong, Deputy Director of VAEI, the preparations for Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Project are being implemented on schedule as required by the Government.

The State Steering Committee of Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project has directed the related ministries, branches to attempt to implement the project in accordance with the roadmap. The sub-committees on science and technology, human resources training, legal documents ... have also been formed to serve the project.

"However, nuclear power is a new area, so science and technology infrastructure, legal framework, human resources... are major difficulties in implementing this project", said Mr. Hong.

To provide information to the press, contents of the workshop focused on introducing the development of nuclear power in the world, providing information on the nuclear power development program in Vietnam and introducing nuclear technology applications in the fields of industry and environment of Vietnam.

On this occasion, experts from the International Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) and Japan has presented basic knowledge about nuclear power, the role of the IAEA to nations with plans to develop nuclear power and the experience of Japan in the process of developing nuclear power.

Especially, in the reports, experts have emphasized the role of communication in developing nuclear power, because through the press, the people can understand the necessity of nuclear power to the country's development.
