PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce exchanging of a filter so as to reduce a cost, even when grinding chips are removed through the filter while a coolant is circulated in a grinding process that employs a fixed abrasive as a grinding pad.

SOLUTION: A method of manufacturing glass substrates for magnetic disks has a process to remove glass sludge while circulating a coolant pooled in a coolant tank through a grinding device, when the surfaces of glass substrates are ground by use of the grinding device with a surface plate attached with fixed abrasive. The filter is provided between the coolant tank and a fluid passage of the grinding device, and the coolant is fed from the coolant tank to the grinding device via the filter, so as to filtrate glass sludge contained in the coolant. The glass sludge remaining on the filter is separated and collected in the coolant tank by flowing air to the filter in the opposite direction of the circulation direction of the coolant every predetermined intervals
