Description

Subject: new technology solutions in raising the effectiveness of constructions of the sea and river barriers.

Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate and a varied terrain with thousands of rivers and nearly 2,000 km of coastline. These are the main water resources for the agriculture and the hydropower.

However, a major difficulty is that the rivers in our country have the plentiful water in the wet season and depletion or shortage of water in the dry season and the sea level increasingly rises due to climate change leading to the results such as shortage of water for the agriculture and hydropower, saltwater intrusions that considerably impact on the agricultural production and the life of people.

Nowadays, our huge requirement is to step by step build the barriers in large estuaries in conditions the water shortage due to the upstream overexploitation, climate change and sea level rise that are increasingly urgent.

The biggest challenge is that applying the quick construction technologies, saving cost and time. There is an invention to overcome the limitations of traditional construction that have to building foundation on the convex beach of curve river, changing the flow by blocking the river or damming temporarily in the middle of upstream and downstream where the drain is constructed, building sluice in the downstream, draining - off by pumps, laying foundation for sluice/dam ... removing the conferdam, making canal to direct the flow when after finishing the construction.

 The traditional technologies are costly due to the complex construction process, which is accompanied by damaging the landscape/the environment, even emigrant, land clearance, land loss, adverse environmental impact ... and after all high cost.

A New invention of Dam pillar refers to the basic principles of sluice design to change the bearing structure, waterproofing structure and anti-erosion structure serving technology innovation in tidal sluice construction: from building in the large dry pit to building in the water flow.

- The bearing principle: The barrier is stabilized by the underground principle, entirely different from the friction principle caused by the gravity in the traditional technologies;

- Waterproof:  the vertical border principle by ban cu” or caisson dam differs from the horizontal border principle of the bed of work in the   traditional technologies;

- The erosion before and after sluice:

Enlargement of sluice span for speed after sluice smaller than allowable erosion speed of weak original earth, and so, just laying anti-erosion rocks instead of a massive structure of “TIEU NANG in traditional works.

The basic principle is to help change the sluice structure, serving innovation in construction technology from large dry pit to narrow, underflow pit that is close to the underwater construction technology of traffic bridges, has overcome the crucial problems of traditional technologies of barrier construction.

 Application of the new invention can help to reduce to 30% the cost of the project compared to the traditional technologies, bringing the high economic value to the society.

The invention has been applied successfully in many projects such as: Cui River Sluice (Long An), Hien Luong Sluice (Quang Ngai), Thao Long Sluice (Thua Thien Hue) ... and many other works.

An success in the efficiency and the broad application of the invention, in 2012, the pillar dam and caisson dam technologies were was honored to receive the prestigious awards: Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and technology
