Description

Flooding is a common phenomenon in Vietnam. It might occur in all regions of the country, especially in coastal region around center Vietnam, the Mekong delta and the Red river delta.

By looking annual statistic, the extent of damage caused by flooding can be partially imagined. The physical damage, destroyed housing and construction, lost property and physical damages are not compensatory. The number of reported grief and loss has been increasing; crisis and mental collapse are unavoidable.

To cope with above issues, there is a requirement to closely monitor weather fluctuation to have prompt response in the rainy season in order to minimize the damage caused to people and property at the lowest level. Also, new technological solutions in housing construction is needed in flooding areas to support people response to natural disasters, climate change, and minimize damages and losses caused by natural disasters and climate change.

Every year, citizens in Central area are struggling with hurricanes that engulf villages and houses in reservoir of water, causes great damage to people and property. After each flood was gone, people came home empty-handed. Images of flood victims’ lifeless and terrified eyes create inspiration for him to design a shelter for people in flooding season.

"Versatile and semi mobile housing" was designed from his goodwill and sympathy for the flood victims. If the ideas are soon to be put into practice, I would help miserable people reduce damages caused natural disasters. That is the stimulation for Nguyen Ich Thang to work on this research.

The house consists of two components:

Part 1: This is the fixed part. Its function is to serve as major part of living space.

Part 2: This is the mobile part. It will vertically float with the rise of flood. It would become shelter for people in the strikes of disaster in general, and floods in particular.

This section is designed with water supply and vegetables for people in flooding days that would be rapid and in the spot response to instant flood.

Two sides are covered by two buoys. One is for daily usage; the other one is for farming in flooding days. These buoys also help in keeping the mobile section more stable and reducing vibration while floating on the water.

Construction materials can be found locally which environmental friendly, quick and easy to construct, and familiar to local craftsmen. The building will be stable in flooding season thanks to close cohesion in the blocks.

With the above features, the "Versatile and semi-mobile house" of Nguyen Ich Thang won first prize in the contest "Creative ideas for multi-purpose house to cope with climate change" organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2011.

In the future, if the ideas are put into actual implementation, it will be an effective solution to help the flood victims, especially people in Central Vietnam and the Mekong Delta, where natural disasters happens in a frequent basis, to reduce damages to people, property, livestock and overcome difficulties during the rainy season.
