ABB Robotics Company will reveal YuMi, dubbed as the world’s first collaborative dual armed robot designed for a world in which humans and robots work together more closely, at Metalex Vietnam 2015 slated to kick off in HCMC on October 8.

ABB said in a statement that YuMi is designed to resemble human counterparts, encouraging a friendly and non-threatening work environment along with a compact, dual-arm body that does not require space more than a human workstation. Each magnesium arm of the robot flexes on seven axes in order to achieve human-like movements and dexterity, and makes it meet the production needs of electronics manufacturers.

YuMi is equipped with a lightweight yet rigid magnesium skeleton covered with plastic casings wrapped in soft padding to absorb any unexpected impact. When YuMi detects any unexpected impact such as a collision on workers, the system will halt its motion which can be restarted again.

According to ABB, YuMi is built to handle anything from the delicate parts of a wristwatch to the components found in tablets and mobile phones.

Visitors to Metalex Vietnam 2015 can inspect YuMi and a working environment where humans and robots can safely handle tasks side-by-side as well as hundreds of international brands.

Duangdej Yuaikwarmdee, deputy managing director and general manager for Vietnam of Reed Tradex Co. Ltd., the organizer of Metalex Vietnam 2015, said ABB has been working on their two-armed YuMi robot since 2006.

“In the concept of the collaborative robots, the participation of ABB Robotics with YuMi at Metalex Vietnam this year promises to provide the interesting experiment to Vietnamese industrialists,” Yuaikwarmdee said.

With nine years of existence in Vietnam, Metalex Vietnam is the international show for metalworking solutions, encouraging over 10,000 industrialists to invest in the technology of metalworking and machining tools every year.

Metalex Vietnam is not only a convergence for manufacturers but also the stage for technology and world advanced techniques, according to the organizers.

Metalex Vietnam 2015 along with Business Alliance for supporting industries expo 2015, and Electronics assembly 2015 will take place at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center in HCMC’s District 7 from October 8 to 10.
