Climate change has caused Vietnam a total economic damage of VND15 trillion (US$672.6 million) from the end of 2014 to 2016, reported the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control at a seminar recently.

Under the El Nino's impact, 18 provinces and cities in the south central region, the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta have experienced widespread drought and salt intrusion affecting the life of about two million citizens and damaging hundreds of thousands of hectares of rice.

Central and local governments have assisted residents with nearly VND1.4 trillion (US$63 million) to overcome difficulties. International organizations have provided localities with US$16.1 million in emergency aid to repair El Nino consequences.
