Hi-tech farmed areas account for just 16.4 percent of Lam Dong Province’s arable land but for some 30 percent of its agricultural production value while also increasing farmer incomes by 30 percent.

Hi-tech agriculture increases profit by more than 30 percent

According to Director of the Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Van Minh, the province has 43,084ha hi-tech farmed, achieving 25-30 percent increases in productivity while yielding more than a 30 percent increase in profit.

Local farmer households have been encouraged to apply hi-tech farming techniques including greenhouse farming coupled with automated irrigation and fertilization systems, which have helped improve the quality and productivity of agricultural products, meeting domestic and export demands.

According to General Director of the Dalat Flower Forest Biotechnology Corporation Nguyen Dinh Son, through applying modern equipment and in vitro propagation, the company has successfully improved agricultural products in terms of productivity and quality, with about 90 percent of the seedlings meeting international standards and being exported to Denmark, Holland, Belgium, New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Japan, Australia, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea. In addition, the company has constructed a hi-tech greenhouse to nurse flowers, which yields more than 1.8 million flower twigs per ha per annum, worth of more than VND3 billion.

Hi-tech agriculture is one of the province’s spearheads and is attracting special attention from investors. To date, the province has had 16 agricultural products registered for brands and seven single brand names and nine collective brand names recognized. There have been 70 investors interesting in hi-tech agricultural development, with total investment capital of US$500 million, said Deputy Chairman of the Lam Dong People’s Committee Pham S.

Hi-tech agricultural development is top priority

The province will focus on hi-tech farming of agricultural products it has potential to gradually consolidate its position as an agriculturally developed provinces in Vietnam and the region, said Le Van Minh.

Until 2020, the province will increase the hi-tech farmed areas to 18,668ha, including 5-7 safe vegetable farming areas, three flower farming areas, and further promote the application of hi-tech farming techniques such as in vitro propagation, smart irrigators and hydroponics and to increase quality and productivity. In addition, it will strive to automate harvest, preservation and processing activities.
