Team of surgeons who mistakenly operated on wrong legs for a man were suspended from working and asked to write a report of the surgery, said Vice Director of Viet Duc ( Viet- German) Hospital Dr. Tran Binh Giang said at a press brief on July 20.

The hospital will set up a scientific council to check treatment  procedure and  cover all cost of the treatment for the man.

37 year old Tran Van Thao in Hanoi was undergoing an operation to restore his paralyzed left leg. However, instead of performing the surgery on his left leg, the surgery team operated on the right one before realizing their mistake.

Patient's relatives said that surgeons completed the surgery on the affected limb but requested additional fees, thus frustrating the patient’s relatives.

The hospital managers admitted the mistake and directly apologized the patient and his relatives. The managing board promised to take full responsibility to observe the patient’s health in the future.

The man is recovering after the operation. He is under close observation to check his health condition.

On the same day, the Ministry of Health sent its document to the hospital managers, asking for the cause of the mistake and issuing harsh penalties on team of surgeons as per the regulation as well as report it to the media and the Medical Examination and Treatment Department under the Ministry of Health before July 26.

Vice Health Minister cum director of Viet-Duc Hospital Professor Nguyen Viet Tien issued a decision to suspend Dr. Phan Van Hau of Bone Ward for violating the treatment regulations which caused the mistake. Dr. Hau must write a report about the case.
