From the results of the project “Research on developing specialty black glutinous rice varieties which can be cultivated 2 crops/year in Northern provinces of Vietnam with high productivity and good quality”, scientists from Institute of Crops Research and Development (Vietnam Nationality University of Agriculture) have succeeded in creating DH6 black glutinous rice.

DH6 black glutinous rice, which is selected and tamed from Campe black glutinous rice (collected from Thanh Hoa), has growth duration of 127-142 days in spring crop and 105-115 days in seasonal crop. This rice plant is 98-115 cm in height, has hard stem, good lodging resistance, ability of intensive farming, good tillering, purple or dark green leaf, high ratio of firm grain, yield of 35-40 quintals/ha (good intensive farming can bring higher capacity of 50 quintals/ha). Grain is black, soft, thin;, endosperm has almost black pigment; rice has good quality, high nutrition value, low amylose content (3.79%); and cooked rice is glutinous and aromatic. Protein content and lipid content in DH6 are 6.8% and 20% higher than that in other types of rice respectively, and it also contains carotene, 8 types of amino acid… DH6 has a wide range of adaptability, can be cultivated 2 crops/year in North and Central provinces such as Dien Bien, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Bac Giang, Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Phong, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa.
