Scientists from Field Crops Research Institute have successfully created a hybrid rice variety named GL159 by traditional hybridisation method and pedigree selection method (acknowledged as among 2015 technology advances by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development).

Hybrid rice GL159 created from the hybrid combination of HT1/OM2395/KD18 has growth duration of 130-135 days (spring crop), 110-115 days (seasonal crops), 110-115cm in height, fast and strong growth, medium and regular tillering, dark green leaf, big panicle, long and close grain with deep brown colour. Its grains have features as 23-25g in weight per 1000 grains, long, pure and high quality, soft, moreish, and crispy cooked rice with slight aroma. GL159 has medium lodging resistance, good resistance to rice blast disease and brown backed rice plant hopper, ability to farm in both spring crop and seasonal crop in Hong River Delta and Northern Mountains with real capacity of 70-75 quintals/ha, or of 80-85 quintals/ha in good intensive farming (spring crop), and 55-60 quintals/ha, or of 65-70 quintals/ha in good intensive farming (seasonal crops).
