CO oxidation catalyst at low temperature

Scientists from Institute of Chemical Technology have successfully completed the project “Research on manufacturing CO oxidation catalyst at low temperature and application on treatment of boiler exhaust fume by biomass fuel” thanks to expense supporting by Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology.

Scientists have created 2 types of capsuled industrial catalyst on the basis of CuO modified with Cr2O3 and Pt carried by mixture of γ-Al2O3 and Kaolin tube with 12mm in height; these 2 types have physicomechanical characteristics suitable for catalysts used for exhaust fume treatment by hydraulic and sheet extrusion method. The testing results showed that, they treat not only CO in boiler exhaust fume by biomass fuel but also NOx and H2 in polluted air. Operation temperature range of them is quite low (<300oC). In this range, both can treat boiler exhaust fume meeting the specified  standards with high air flow (V=10000 h-1). By calculation, treatment with these catalysts is cheap, effective, can be applied in industry to treat boiler exhaust fume and contributes to reduce environmental pollution. The project has also designed, manufactured and installed a pilot plant with 30m3/h capacity and run trial at 26 m3/h to treat exhaust fume from a sawdust boiler in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City; built a process of catalyst shaping used for exhaust fume treatment at low temperature; and built treatment process of exhaust fume from boiler powered by biomass fuel.
