At the moment, the mobile software market has seen the presence of more than ten local and foreign-invested security firms, including Kaspersky, Trend Micro, Symantec and Bitdefender, along with local companies like BKAV and CMC. These enterprises all attributed the scant demand to the fact that local consumers still care little about information security of their mobile gadgets.
Ngo Tran Vu, managing director of NTS Security Co. as the distributor of Kaspersky software, said security software demand for mobile products has yet to grow in Vietnam recently. Sales of these products are very small compared to the amount spent on security products for computers at home, Vu noted.
Echoing Vu’s view, Nguyen Ngoc Hiep, sales director of Dinh Thai Phong Co., which is the retailer of security software of Trend Micro in Vietnam, noticed the indifference of local buyers towards using security software for mobile products, explaining it is because the ratio of cell phones attacked by hackers is much smaller than that of computers.
According to Hiep, only 1% of mobile gadgets users are interested in installing anti-virus software. It is because hackers targeting cell phones fail to either steal or exploit any information on mobile equipment in the context that mobile banking transactions and electronic payments are yet to develop in the nation.
Experts in the industry said despite the quiet market, industry insiders have still continued launching new products this year with an aim to survey local demand whilst waiting for better business chances.
Trend Micro said the firm has introduced to local customers a security version for cell phones since March 2012, allowing domestic users to download and use the version for free before planning to sell the product from this quarter.
