Following news on Chinese TV that farmers in Weifang City in Shandong Province have been overusing a very dangerous pesticide called Aldicarb in growing ginger for several years, the Department of Plant Protection tested samples of Chinese ginger.
The department also took samples from 10 big wholesale markets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City for testing.
Subsequently, one sample of ginger among 50 was discovered to contain some Aldicarb pesticide that was above permissible levels and the sample was taken from Binh Dien Wholesale Market in District 8 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Meantime, Vietnam Food Administration also conducted a test on five different Chinese ginger samples which showed that none of them contained Aldicarb.
More than 800 tons of ginger from China has passed customs to enter Vietnam in the first five months of the year.
