Plastic food wrappers to be tested
2:47 CH,15/08/2013
Following widespread concern about use of carcinogenic polyvinylchloride (PVC) in food wrappers, the National Institute of Food Control and the Institute of Hygiene and Public Health are asking for nationwide spot checks of the product.
Earlier, media in China and Vietnam had released reports that health watchdogs had discovered banned substance DEHA (di [z-ethylhexyl] adipate) in plastic food wrappers.
The news caught the attention of the Vietnam Food Administration under the Ministry of Health, which is responsible for managing food hygiene, safety, and quality.
The organization has since asked two institutes to look into the issue and send a report before August 10.
In related news, the Vietnam Food Administration announced that it has not issued a license for food hygiene and safety to Viridian Licorice Root Vegetarian Nutritional Supplement.
The Food Standards Agency in the United Kingdom had issued Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to Viridian Licorice Root Vegetarian Nutritional Supplement because Salmonella, that can cause digestive infection, has been found in some of the products.
