With the support from Vietnam Energy Efficient Public Lighting project (VEEPL) and the National Program on Energy Efficiency and Conservation, school lighting has been greatly improved in two recent years. Starting with demonstrations in Thai Binh, Hai Phong, Hanoi, up to now, the energy efficient lighting model has been applied in thousands of classrooms nationwide.
Experience of mobilizing financial resources
Supporting the development, demonstration and application of the energy efficient school lighting model is one of the important activities of the VEEPL project. The project has collaborated with partners to successfully develop and demonstrate the model for elementary, secondary and high schools. Demonstration results in some schools have shown that the proposed model has ensured national lighting standards, saved energy and can be used to replace old lighting systems which are not eligible.
"The difficulty in implementing the project is to mobilize financial resources. However, during the implementation, the localities have proposed many initiatives to raise capital from businesses and citizens” - said Dr. Phan Hong Khoi, managing director of the VEEPL project.
Le Ngoc Han Primary School, Ho Chi Minh, has reduced 43% of power consumption for lighting by applying high efficiency lighting solutions. According to calculations, if a school improves 30 classrooms under the standard model, about VND 2.3 million will be saved each month.
According to Dr. Tran Dinh Bac, Head of Science, Technology and Training, the Vietnam Lighting Association, results of surveys on the status of school lighting in our country have shown that most classes use T10-40W bulbs which have no reflectors and are ineligibly installed. This lighting system is the main reason for the high rate of short-sighted students. Therefore, the construction of classroom lighting standards towards energy efficiency and conservation is essential. Selection of light sources of high quality and high performance not only saves energy and protect the environment but also contributes to improving the quality of education.
