Vietnamese scientists have announced the discovery of a new endangered plant species called Cap Dak Nong (Capparis daknongensis DT Sy) in Vietnam’s Central Highlands.
The new plant species was discovered by a group of researchers from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Thai Nguyen Pedagogic University during a survey in Dak Nong province.
According to the VAST website, 25-30 specimens of the new species were observed on a mountain slope in Dak Nia commune in Gia Nghia district of Dak Nong province.
It is morphologically similar to C. khuamak, but differs in having pruinose twigs, fewer stamens, longer filaments and gynophore, and a different fruit morphology.
This species is listed as endangered, according to the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Vietnamese scientists are continuing to study the biology and ecology of this species for effective conservation.
