The Ca Mau’s large flying fox’s scientific name is Pteropus vampyrus. This species is rare mammal listed in the list of protected animals of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
According to a survey by the Forest Protection Department under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Ca Mau province, the large flying fox are in danger of distinction. The number of bats in Ca Mau is only 2,000 individuals, 10 times decrease compared with the number of 2006 in Ca Mau.  The effects of storms and the negative impacts from the demolition of trees for industrial shrimp farming are main reasons for decrease of this species. Moreover, many traders hunted to purchase this species at high prices.
Before this situation, the Ca Mau provincial People's Committee has instructed their Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with local governments actively propagating and mobilizing people to raise their awareness of protecting and conserving this rare species. They also called for the organizations of wildlife conservation to provide funding for conservation the species.
